Lost and Found Pets

Lost Pets

  1. Search list of all animals at the Shelter
  2. Search other area shelters online through PetHarbor.com
  3. Visit local shelters and check websites to see if your pet has arrived
  4. Complete the Lost Animal Report , and leave the form in the Lost Animal Binder in our lobby. If you would like to submit a form on-line, email County Animal Care and ask for an electronic form to be sent to you
  5. Visit the shelters at least once every three days and do not rely on phone inquiries. Talk to newspaper and postal carriers and diligently search for at least one month. Check the Incoming Log at the shelter.
  6. Distribute fliers within a one mile radius of where the pet was lost. Post at veterinary hospitals, grocery stores, schools, Laundromats and churches. Flier should include date and place where pet was lost, type and breed and your telephone number. Do not put your name on the flier. View sample flier.
  7. Place an ad in the lost and found section of local papers including the Sacramento Bee (916-321-1234), Penny Saver, neighborhood and on-line bulletin boards.
  8. Use caution and take a friend when responding to a 'found' pet tip. Once you are reunited, remove all fliers. And don't forget, pets wearing license identification tags are returned home much faster!

Found Pets: How to find the pet's owner:

  1. Download the Found Animal Form and bring it into the shelter, along with any flyers. If you wish to submit the form on-line, email County Animal Care and ask for an electronic form to be sent to you
  2. Post fliers around your area
  3. Notify shelters that you have the animal in case owners contact the shelters- most local shelters have found cards you can post.
  4. Notify local vets
  5. Post an ad in the Sacramento Bee Sacramento Bee's Online Classifieds Placement
If you can't care for the animal:
Contact area shelters. Many 24-hour veterinarian hospitals will take animals after hours until a local shelter is open.

If the animal is injured:
Contact veterinarians in your area or local shelter immediately. Most 24-hour emergency vets will take stray injured animals after hours and provide care.
