Lexie’s Story

Photo of Lexie in a red shirt After a year of marriage, and facing a year-long separation due to military duties, my husband and I decided to add a dog to the family for companionship, security, and entertainment. We headed out to scour the shelters in August 2005, searching for that "perfect" dog that would capture our attention.

Three shelters and five hours later, we were still "dog-less". We drove up to the County shelter an hour before it closed and quickly searched the kennels. With a huge variety of pets, we knew we had to come back the next day for a closer look and more time.

We arrived at the opening of “Save Us Sunday” and spent three hours playing with three different dogs. Lexie was number two. This one-year-old pit bull/border collie mix had the most affable and loving nature. Her wiggly body and jovial eyes instantly captured our hearts. As a pit bull, she satisfied my husband’s desire for a “manly” dog. At 45 pounds, she suited my preference for a house dog. She was ready to go home with us that day, and we instantly became a family of three.

It has been one month, and Lexie has proven to be the perfect companion and entertainer; providing love, affection, and priceless dog moments. We are extremely grateful to the Sacramento County Shelter staff and volunteers, who made the process memorable, and provided us with the ideal addition to our family.
