Pumba’s Story

Photograph of Pumba the dog playing with a toy. Pumba was adopted in November 2001. She is now four and is a Staffordshire Terrier/ Chow mix. I decided that I wanted an all white, adult dog and I would name her Snowstorm. First we went to the county shelter and went through every aisle. There were no white dogs, but this all-black dog who kept staring at me. She had these really cute ears that stuck up but were floppy at the tips. She was jumping on one of the dogs sharing the kennel with her but kept looking at me like she knew I should adopt her. Well, we went to all the shelters in town and there were no white dogs. I kept thinking about that all-black dog who kept looking at me when I was at the county shelter and told my husband that we had to go back and get her.  He laughed and said "How will you call your all-black dog 'Snowstorm’?"  I didn't care; I could not get her out of my mind.

We were told that she did not seem like she would make a good pet as it appeared she was not interested in people. We decided to take a chance on her anyway and we are so happy that we did. Pumba is wonderful with people and has been a great addition to our family. She entertains us all the time with those ears of hers and her very large lower lip. She loves to chase squirrels and behaves herself much better than Cody, my other dog that I raised from a puppy. So I didn't get my all-white Snowstorm dog, but I think I did much better.  Besides, as she is aging she has already turned white on her muzzle and her chest! She definitely chose me, and I couldn't be happier with her choice.
