Shorty's Story

Photograph of Shorty the dog lying on a bed. We adopted our great dog Shorty, also known as Short-doggie-dog (after Snoop), for my daughter’s birthday present in 1990. The vet estimated he was aproximately 2 years old at the time. However, Shorty is a ball/rock/whatever chaser and chewer so he really could be younger. Even though he is 16 now with no teeth, one eye, and pretty deaf, he is still going strong!

Shorty was married to Cleo, our rottweiller, for 10.5 years. When Cleo passed away, Shorty mourned for months. Then, one day he decided that I was the next best thing to Cleo and we have been best "buds" since. Companionship aside, this dog has been an immense comfort to me while my son (in the marines) has had two tours of duty in Iraq.

He watched the TV coverage of the war with me although he has never been a TV hound and, he has been up in the middle of the night with me often when I was unable to sleep due to worrying. I tell my friends and others that this dog was a gift from God!! Animals truly are that are they not?

I am home alone during the week now ...my daughter left for college just two weeks ago. It is so wonderful to come home after work and there is my best friend waiting for me. Always happy to greet me.

Sacramento County was his adoption agency!! Thanks !!
